The first roll back from the lab
Nora Ellis

I bought a secondhand film camera in August, mostly because it was heavy and quiet and felt like it would make me slow down. Then I didn't use it for two months.
Last week I finally finished a roll and dropped it at the lab on the way to work. Thirty-six frames. Nine were good, four were blurry in an interesting way, and one is my thumb, in excellent focus.
What surprised me is how differently I looked. With my phone I take ten photos of a thing and keep none. With film I stood in front of the lake for a full minute before taking one, and that one is on my wall now.
The best of them are on my photos page. The thumb did not make the cut.
